Selfie doesn't have to mean "self-centered," it can mean "self-love." Through the mirror of a horse we can learn to love ourselves and find happiness in our lives.

"Happiness & Self-Love Intertwine"
Today is International Day of Happiness and all week I’ve been thinking about what makes people happy and why it seems elusive for some of us.
Most people in my life see me as a very positive person and generally pretty happy because I follow my dreams and have a life of my own design. But what they don’t see is my shadow-side: the side of me that is often negative, judgmental, irritated, angry, and occasionally depressed. I know we all experience these emotions but my recovering perfectionist believes I shouldn’t ever judge or be negative. Yet this thinking that I SHOULD be different is what blocks my own happiness.
Acceptance leads to self-love and to happiness so that is what I now work on, the right to be me – good, bad, and ugly!
The “selfie” that inspired this website is above. I used to cringe and laugh each time I saw it because it’s hands-down the worst photo I’ve taken of myself or of this beautiful horse, Felici. Yet each time I’ve looked at it, I’ve also had my loving inner voice say – can you accept yourself when you don’t look your best? The answer used to be “no” and so I would put on masks because how the world viewed me is how I viewed myself.
Now, after lots of personal development work and teachings from the horses, I’ve learned that I can see myself through the eyes of unconditional love. I’ve never looked at any horse and thought – that horse doesn’t deserve love or that horse is ugly. I just see pure love and beauty. I realized I can apply this to myself as well. So sharing this photo was scary for me because of my old thinking: outward-focused and validation-seeking. However, the truth is it’s funny and it was a snapshot in time of a horse head-butting me as I took several selfies. No one needs to be deemed ugly and I don’t have to take myself so seriously, do I?
In preparing to launch this site, I’ve had many opportunities to go within and stop focusing on what others think. When I let others determine my view of myself then I give my power away. Why would I want to do that? My happiness is an inside job. It’s no one else’s responsibility to approve of me, acknowledge me, or celebrate me. I hold the keys to unlock and expand my own heart.
Happiness and self-love are intertwined, as one grows so does the other. Horses bring me to both immediately. I know they do for many others as well. So it’s fitting that this site launches on International Happiness Day and in tribute to and honor of Felici, a horse whose name meant “happiness” in Italian. May we inspire you to love yourself just a little bit more each day and to follow your bliss.
